Read... What I'm reading, what I thought about it. Le Tour de Testosterone (8-14-04!) Book Review 4-12-03: The Corrections Book Review 12-29-02: The Epic of New York City Book Review 9-7-2002: Oprah-fied Fiction
... and Delicious Journals Andrew Rilstone is an Englishman who shares my obsessions with Tolkien and C.S. Lewis and also has interesting things to say about the Church of England. Apartment 11D is the journal of a New York City mom and writer. Lots of great and funny details about city life. But now she's moved, so let's hope she does as well with suburbia. bobofett Dana=funny+sassy+angry+cooler than you. Be warned, as she is obsessed with her turdmonster. Don't go there if you don't think you can handle that. cowgirl funk is the blog/journal of Maxwell, an ex-Texan theater type, who is so much cooler than me, it hurts. But in a good way. darn-tootin Rob is a fellow ex-pat Texan, who can be touching, amusing, and may edit the world's only parakeet-written newsletter. He's in the process of repatriating to Texas, to which I can only say, better you than me, buddy. deanpence is my friend Furious D, Objectivist, atheist, and all-around fighter of stupidity. gwenworld Houstan-ite Gwen disappeared for a while, but she's back, and still funny and cool. Les cadeux is the journal of another New Yorker, who, when I met her at a mathplusone get-together, proved to be sweet as pie. thematthewshow. yes, it's my husband. Cute, talented, and mustachioed. What more could I ask for? Niel's Inner Web. Poor Niel, he's been a good friend since I met him at my first job in NY, and still it took me months and months to link to him. But for whatever it's worth, he's linked now. Journal about the life of a NY native regular guy. One Good Thing. I really love this journal. She lives in Chicago and runs an adult-toys-for-women shop, so her retail stories surpass anyone else's. Still, she's also a mom who lives a pretty much normal life otherwise, and writes about it well. Satan's Laundromat A photo-journal (blog, whatever) of a neighborhood in Brooklyn that may disappear soon. Elegant and funny. stealthpunch she lives the glamorous struggling-screenwriter life in Burbank, so you don't have to--you can just read about it from the safety of your boring little world.
Blogs bookslut Funny, insightful, non-snobby and with tons of useful book reviews. It has both a monthly issue, and a daily blog, though the archives will keep me busy for weeks. Lots of Texas contributors don't hurt. gothamist is quite possibly the best NY blog I've found so far. Funny, lots of restaurant reviews, and slightly panda-obsessed. An excellent intro to the city. Jessica Atlanta native Jessica, who I knew when she was writergirl, blogs about everything from Asian cinema to economics to Buffy. Jim Romenesko's Obscure Store and Reading Room The go-to place for News of the Weird. If you get a forwarded email about a woman who keeps 100 pigs in her backyard, chances are it showed up here first. metafilter kind of the grand old man of weblogs; a great source of weird links, news articles, and geek opinion. mimi smartypants is footloose and fancy free. With penguins. And now she's a mommy, to which I can only say: lucky kid. Political
Blogs Alas, A Blog is run by a cartoonist named Amp, who concentrates on feminist and gender issues. Some really interesting discussions on his comments pages. I check Atrios and Daily Kos at least once a day. Constantly updated news on politics in general and the most recent lies told by Bush administration officials. Unapologetically liberal, but heavy on facts and links to back up their accusations. Echidne of the Snakes A great new blog, done in the persona of a minor Greek goddess who just happens to take an interest in politics. Well-written and very funny. Nylarathotep's Miscellany. I once posted that I thought poetry had been totally absorbed into songwriting. But this poet/blogger writes so well I have reconsidered. Pandagon are two brothers, frighteningly young to be so well-informed about politics. Philosoraptor
Hard-nosed
liberal commentary, from someone who knows his Kant from a hole in
the ground. This
Modern World Tom Tomorrow, aka Dan Perkins, is a cartoonist and
yes, a raving liberal, and scary smart. And funny as hell. Tom Burka's Opinons You Should Have. Feckin' brilliant. Washington
Monthly blog Written by a moderate liberal from California, who
offers interesting takes on various issues and occasional cute pictures
of his cats.

Bulletin
Boards mathplusone a bulletin board that contains a heavy infusion of Texans and southerners, but only the intelligent, funny, and attractive ones.
The
Great Unknowns The Black Table. Their surrealistic beer reviews alone would be worth the link, but their overall pop-culture-under-a-microscope thing is thoroughly enjoyable. damnhellasskings Portal to some of the best stuff online, with a distinctly Canadian flavor. Dork This guy has, bar none, the best collection of weird records you've ever seen. Also, he collects old license plates and other random things. Hours of fun. Fitziechicks OK, this is hard to explain. If you read For Better or For Worse, this is a semi-regular commentary on it, done snarkily, IM-style, by two sister bloggers. Kind of like Mystery Science Theater 3000 for a comic strip. Flak Magazine Another great pop-culture rag, and some strange and wonderful cartoons also. Jesus of the Week must be seen to be enjoyed. The Morning News a magazine-style site, with excellent odd stories and even odder links. |
